How I managed to plan Six vacations and see Five Countries while working a 40 hour work week…

Wow…can you believe that we are already half way through the year? Half way through the year, and I have already managed to see Georgia, Florida and am on my way to Canada this week. Still, I have trips towards the second half of the year planned, and I am so excited and look so forward to that.

But, let’s not forget, I do have a full time job. I work 40 hours a week and only make $40,000/ year before tax. That is not a whole lot to live off of or even save a lot of.

So, that being said, I bet you are wondering how on Earth all of this is possible. I’ll tell you.

First, let’s talk about the hours. As you probably know by now, I am a master of hoarding my PTO hours, and seeing how much time I have, how many hours I can roll over from year to year and how many hours I will need in each destination.

I also make sure to use up those holidays. This year alone, I have used or plan to use the following holidays and plan my trips around those:

Presidents Day
Labor Day
Veteran’s Day

Whenever there is a conference for work, I make sure that I go, and sometimes I add an extra day or two to make extra room for sightseeing.

The first four trips of the year, I do not or did not have to pay for my accommodations. This helped save a significant amount of money. When I visited Atlanta back in February, I stayed with an aunt. When I visited Orlando back in May, that was a company funded trip. This upcoming trip to Canada, my mother paid for the hotel and invited me along. And then my trip to Newport next month, my father invited me.

If we are looking at the hostels that I will be staying at in Asia, when I visit in November, they are very inexpensive.

When it comes to saving, I am the master. I love to save, and I actually turn saving into somewhat of a game. I keep jars around the house where I save, I create multiple savings accounts. You name it.

I am also not a very big spender. I purchase almost everything used, if at all. I bring my lunch to work every single day. And I mean every single day. I always pack my lunch the night before and do my meal planning and prepping for the week on the weekends. This helps eliminate the urge for me to impulse buy or to purchase food out.

If I am shopping, I like to use the 24 hour rule. If I still want something after 24 hours, I will look into it. I separate things into wants and needs.

At the end of the day, it truly does come down to prioritizing.

    Hey, that is awesome! I’m also a massive fan of the 24 hour rule. Is there some particular big picture goal you’re saving for?

  2. I like to say $5,000. Sometimes I am hesitant to put an exact number on it and not meet that goal. But it is always good to have something to strive for I believe.I aim for that number and if I set aside more than that, the better it will be.
